조개가 증언하는 한일 문화교류 1만 년…부산서 만나는 특별한 전시

 

부산 국립해양박물관에서 국제 기획전*‘조개, かい(카이) – 패각에 담긴 한국과 일본의 흔적’이 3월 2일까지 열린다. 한일 국교 정상화 60주년을 기념해 마련된 이번 전시는 ‘조개’라는 독특한 매개를 통해 양국의 선사시대부터 역사·예술에 이르기까지의 문화 교류를 조명한다.

전시에서는 부산 동삼동 패총에서 출토된 신석기 시대 조개 팔찌와, 한국과 일본에 각각 단 한 점만 존재하는 조개 가면이 최초로 한 공간에서 공개돼 눈길을 끈다. 특히 동삼동 유적의 높은 문화적 위상과 당시 해양문화의 발전 수준을 생생하게 보여준다.

또한 전시 후반부에서는 조개가 예술로 승화된 나전칠기(자개) 작품을 통해 한국과 일본의 미감 차이를 비교할 수 있다. 화려함을 강조한 일본 작품과 자연미를 중시한 한국 작품이 대비되며, 한일 미의식의 공통점과 차이를 동시에 느낄 수 있다.

부산비비기 공식 이벤트에서는 무료로 관람 가능한 이번 전시는 조개라는 작은 소재를 통해 한일 문화의 밀접했던 과거를 새롭게 바라보게 하는 뜻깊은 기회다. (월요일 휴관)

An international special exhibition, “Shells, Kai (かい) – Traces of Korea and Japan Preserved in Shells,” is being held at the National Maritime Museum of Korea in Busan through March 2. Organized to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan, the exhibition explores cultural exchanges between the two countries from prehistoric times to historical periods and the arts, using shells as a unique medium.

The exhibition features Neolithic shell bracelets excavated from the Dongsam-dong Shell Midden in Busan, as well as shell masks—each unique in Korea and Japan—that are being displayed together in the same space for the first time. These artifacts vividly illustrate the high cultural status of the Dongsam-dong site and the advanced level of maritime culture at the time.

In the latter part of the exhibition, visitors can compare Korean and Japanese aesthetic sensibilities through mother-of-pearl (najeonchilgi) works, where shells are transformed into art. Japanese pieces emphasize ornate brilliance, while Korean works highlight natural beauty, allowing visitors to appreciate both the similarities and differences in the artistic philosophies of the two cultures.

Admission is free. This exhibition offers a meaningful opportunity to rediscover the closely connected cultural past of Korea and Japan through the humble yet evocative medium of shells. (Closed on Mondays)
